Barbeque Safety

Enjoy your barbecue safely and help prevent fires, injuries and damage to property.

Every year, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service attends incidents involving barbecues that have got out of control. Follow these simple safety tips to keep yourself and others safe.

Top barbecue safety tips

  • Never leave a barbecue unattended.

  • Keep a bucket of water, sand or a hose nearby.

  • Keep children and pets away from the cooking area.

  • Place your barbecue on a flat, stable surface.

  • Keep it well away from fences, sheds, trees, shrubs and garden waste.

  • Never use a barbecue, lit charcoal or disposable barbecue inside a tent, caravan or other enclosed space.

  • Do not use petrol, paraffin or other flammable liquids to light a barbecue.

  • Only use approved barbecue lighting products on cold coals.

  • If you're in charge of the barbecue, avoid alcohol and stay alert.

  • Allow the barbecue and ashes to cool completely before moving or disposing of them.

  • Never put hot ashes into a bin.
