A family of seven had a lucky escape during the early hours of this morning (Tuesday, April 6) after a smoke alarm alerted them to a fire in their home on Anglesey.

At 02:45am North Wales Fire and Rescue Service received a report of a fire at a terraced property on London Road in Holyhead.

Crews arrived at the scene to find the family – two adults and five young children, had escaped the fire. All were taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor by ambulance to be checked.

The fire, which is believed to have started outside the back of the property, then spread to the house via the back door. Fire damage was caused to the door and smoke damage has been caused to the inside of the property.

Simon Bromley from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We regularly remind residents of the importance of having smoke alarms and testing them weekly and this incident reinforces this message. Fortunately, the family escaped but it could have been a lot worse had they not have been alerted by the smoke detector.

“We also urge residents to ensure they keep escape routes clear and not to ensure that any materials that are stored outside are stored safely.”
