Early Christmas presents for fire and rescue service competition winners

Posted

A lucky facebook fan and a group of students from Glyndŵr University have been given early Christmas presents as part of a student safety campaign organised by North Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

In time for the new term last September, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service commissioned theatre and performance students from Glyndŵr University to produce short clips promoting student fire safety and these were posted to its YouTube and Facebook pages. Each of the student safety videos featured fictional stories based on different safe safety themes - each with a hard-hitting message.

The five videos produced were then used in a North Wales Fire and Rescue Service Facebook competition where viewers were encouraged to 'like' their favourite with one 'liker' winning a brand new Kindle.

Newly graduated teacher Robyn Hawkins from Oswestry was the lucky facebook 'liker' picked at random and was presented with a brand new kindle last week. She said: "I've recently graduated from Glyndŵr and I think that the videos are a great way to get these important messages through to students. I'm thrilled to have won the Kindle!"

The Service also presented the group who starred in the video with most 'likes' with cinema tickets. The most popular video, entitled 'Don't invite death to the party' featured students Kayleigh Venables, Lee Titley, David Smith Ames and Alexandra Newbon.

Elen Mai Nefydd, senior lecturer in theatre and performance, said: "We work with external organisations constantly to provide our students with real-life projects and this is the latest one.

"North Wales Fire Service wanted to do something a little bit different to promote fire safety to freshers' students and they approached us to see if we wanted to be involved.

"They were originally only going to pick one of the five videos to use in their publicity but they liked them so much they decided to go with all of them. Its great that the group with most 'likes' was rewarded, and I'm told that they've had positive feedback about all of the videos featured.

"The success of the project was really down to the hard work of the students and it's another example of how theatre and performance skills can be useful for so many different settings.

Gareth Griffiths, Senior Fire Safety Manager for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "We're were thrilled to work with students from Glyndŵr University and were very impressed by the standard of their work.

"It's important that students understand the importance of staying safe while having fun - and by working with Glyndŵr to create these short, quirky videos we hope our potentially life-saving messages will really hit home.

"The videos were very popular and we were glad that so many people enjoyed them -as they were made by students for students the messages struck a chord with our target audience."
