A bit about my role …
As a RDS firefighter I am on-call during the evenings and weekends, my role can include turning out to fires at properties, flooding, road traffic collisions, anything that requires emergency services. As part of my role I also attend a drill every Monday evening, this is an opportunity to keep competent and develop new skills. A big part of my role is to educate the community on fire safety focusing on prevention work such as conducting home safety checks.
What activities do you do on a typical day?
Not one day is the same!
What do you enjoy about your job?
It’s different, it’s active, and you must be fit, healthy and strong. I also receive a great sense of satisfaction in helping others.
Why did you choose this career?
I wanted a new challenge! I was looking for something more, and something with a purpose. I also wanted something that could keep me active and a career where I could be a real role model for young people.
What qualifications or experience do you think are necessary to do this job?
You need experience of working with lots of different people and the ability to communicate effectively with the public and your colleagues is essential. You must be a team player and be ready to work hard.
I have a real interest in keeping fit and healthy, I’m very determined and I like tough challenges. I’m not one to give up and nor should you!
What advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?
Work hard; take pride in your fitness, don’t give up too easily, persevere and face the challenge.
