East Area (Wrexham and Flintshire)
East Area (Wrexham and Flintshire)
An introduction from the Partnerships Manager, James Roberts.
We are bordered by Denbighshire, Powys, Shropshire and Cheshire to the east. Wrexham borough covers an area of 195 Square Miles (approximately 505 Square km) and Flintshire covers an area of 169 Square Miles (approximately 437 Square km). The main roads are the A55, and the A483, the route to South Wales.
Wrexham, and Flintshire are home to the largest town in North Wales as well as the largest concentration of industry, probably the best known firms being Airbus and JCB. This region is the economic powerhouse of North Wales.
Over 250,000 people reside in over 100,000 domestic properties across Wrexham and Flintshire and is serviced by numerous schools, colleges and hospitals.
Within the area, we have some of the most attractive countryside in North Wales providing habitat for various protected species such as the Black grouse. Heritage buildings and features such as Chirk castle, Erddig Hall, the world heritage site at Pontcysyllte aqueduct and the Milwr tunnel are representative of the rich history of the area and the long history of the protection and exploitation of its resources.
Our aim is to prevent, protect and respond to all types of situations varying from dealing with road traffic collisions, fighting fires, Water Rescue, Chemical incidents, Flooding and educating the local communities regarding fire safety in the home and enforcing fire safety legislation.
Resources
Within the area we have two whole time stations based at Deeside and Wrexham, which are crewed 24 hours a day 365 days a year. The Ambulance and Fire Services Resource Centre, at Wrexham is a combined station with North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Welsh Ambulance Trust. This allows frontline and support staff to work side by side from both organisations to improve a safer community. Wrexham Resource Centre has a technical rescue unit, an aerial ladder platform, an environmental protection unit, as well as three firefighting appliances.
Deeside Fire Station has a water rescue unit including boat, a foam tender and two firefighting appliances.
We have six retained stations, where the crews respond to an alerter, whenever they are needed in an emergency, these are based at; Chirk, Johnstown, Mold, Flint, Holywell and Buckley.
Community Fire Safety
We strongly encourage all residents to ensure they have a working smoke detector; these are easily obtainable from many sources including, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service by calling 0800 169 1234 or the Community Safety Office on 01978 367 870.
Like all counties, we work closely with the Central Community Safety Department and are working hard to reduce the numbers of deaths and injuries caused by Road Traffic collisions and fires, particularly accidental fires in the home.
We in particular target the more vulnerable members of the community through various partnerships. However, anyone is welcome to seek our advice and assistance regarding home fire safety. As well as our community safety support workers, all whole time personnel and our on call staff are trained to carry out, safe and well checks.
Partnership working is an important aspect of Community Safety and we are involved in a number of projects with the Police, Wrexham and Flintshire Councils, Youth Offending Teams and the voluntary sector. These projects range from the Phoenix scheme and road safety events targeting youths and young adults, to Community Home Safety fairs that provide fire safety advice to the elderly.
Joint working is extremely effective at achieving our aim to make our communities a safer place to live, work and visit.
